We Decide
Barcelona is a pioneer in the smart‐cities movement. The city's annual Smart City Expo World Congress has become a major international trade show. Barcelona expanded its definition of a smart city to include smart government and smart citizens. Developed at Barcelona's Laboratory for Democratic Innovation, Decidim is a joint effort of organizations, including software companies, industry consortiums, research institutions, and civic associations. Decidim is a digital infrastructure for participatory democracy, built entirely and collaboratively as free software. Decidim covers two broad segments of city planning: municipal action plan and district action plan. Vincles BCN is a social innovation project designed to strengthen the social ties of elderly people who feel lonely and to improve their well‐being with the aid of new technologies. The Vincles initiative also illustrates the value of segmentation, a marketing technique that can be highly effective for addressing specific groups of users with similar needs.
