Direct Methods of Moment
This chapter introduces direct methods of moment for structural reliability. These methods are very straightforward and do not have disadvantages of FORM as described in the chapter entitled Methods of Moment Based on First‐ and Second‐Order Transformation, such as the design points and derivative‐based iteration computation. The third‐moment reliability index can be derived from the 3P lognormal distribution. Obviously, the third‐moment reliability method is an approximation, and thus it is expected to have a range for its applicability. For the fourth‐moment reliability index based on the Pearson system, although the parameters in the expression can be directly determined by the first four central moments, there are 12 kinds of PDF in close form and the integration is necessary. The applicable ranges are determined in this chapter for the second‐, third‐, and fourth‐moment reliability methods. The chapter also discusses simplified third‐ and fourth‐moment reliability indices for structural reliability analysis in engineering.
