What Happens in an Earthquake?
In this chapter, the authors aim to briefly explain what an earthquake is and examine what happens in an earthquake, to the natural and built environments. Many processes in and around volcanoes can generate earthquakes, which have very different characteristics from the deep and tectonic seismic events that occur along great faults. Seismic waves travel faster through hard rocks than through softer rocks and sediments. According to a recent study by Daniell et al., examining historical earthquake losses from 1900, around 100 key earthquakes (or 1% of damaging earthquakes) have caused close to 93% of fatalities globally. In addition, they also found that within these events, secondary effects such as landslide and tsunamis have caused nearly 40% of economic losses and fatalities as compared to shaking effects. The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant failure in 2011 and the recent Covid‐19 pandemic of 2020 have highlighted the need to examine compound risks.
