A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The law recognises that certain relationships give rise to a duty to maintain confidentiality, but the obligation to respect confidence is not limited to cases where the parties are in a contractual relationship. Nevertheless, the instances where architects, quantity surveyors, and other professionals in the construction industry become involved in confidential matters usually concern employment and relationships between professional and client. Every person in employment has a duty to safeguard confidential information. In an employment scenario, the information is mainly, although not exclusively, things that are categorised as 'trade secrets'. This is the information which an employee may obtain during the course of employment, but which is specific to the particular employer. The kind of information that an architect or surveyor gains while carrying out various projects is not usually confidential, it is simply part of professional experience. In any architect/client relationship there must be confidence and trust if it is to work properly.
