A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Analytical Foundations
This chapter discusses selected fundamental concepts to give a sense of the techniques that are the foundation of the evolutionary development. An event tree is a logic diagram that starts with a defined initial event and establishes a forward (inductive) logic that organizes sequences of future events that together describe all possible outcomes. Conditionality and sequencing are usually easy to recognize. The events show states of success or failure that can be represented by probabilistic measures. The complications of fault/success tree analysis for dynamic interactions involving multiple paths of fire propagation can be avoided with network analysis and modular descriptors. The basic structure of a performance analysis is the barrier‐space module. Probabilistic degree‐of‐belief estimates expand understanding and evaluation confidence within the windows of uncertainty that exist for all fire safety components. Probabilistic estimates in the Interactive Performance Information (IPI) chart can be converted into performance curves for better personal understanding and visual communication with others.
