A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter discusses the making of chairs by Charles Eames following a different principle from Gerrit Rietveld. The Rietveld chair consists only of half‐finished material, boards and little beams without the possibility to see how they are connected. Eames' first chairs were made of shaped plywood. The wooden shells then became plastic shells, which led to new series of chairs, but never equalled. Eames' use of cast parts is just as technologically orientated and the chairs are better suited to a run of forces than normal profiles to say goodbye to half‐finished profiles. He dedicated himself to ingenious design in which he searched through modern technology to find the best ways of fulfilling ergonomic requirements. Eames introduced aluminium casting, height adjustment, tilt springing, the seat shell, and the castor to show how far technology and industry can be used to press forward to new design concepts.
