Automatic Sprinkler Suppression
Sprinkler systems in existing buildings have been designed and installed for well over a century under a wide variety of conditions. A wide range of factors can affect the quality and effectiveness of a sprinkler system. This chapter combines reliability and design effectiveness to describe system performance. Evaluations involving large open spaces and buildings with high ceilings require more attention. It discusses sprinkler performance analysis and identifies sprinkler system design requirements for a model building. A performance analysis attempts to understand where the sprinkler system will work well, where it may not be as effective, and reasons for the conclusions. A performance analysis separates design effectiveness from the system's agent application. A performance analysis for sprinkler systems augments code and standards design procedures. Its function is to examine an existing system or a proposed new system to recognize any conditions that could compromise effective sprinkler suppression.
