This chapter treats the carbonation of concrete and the induced corrosion of steel bars in concrete elements. Some typical structural cases are first given to illustrate the impact of deterioration on structural performance. Then, the mechanisms of concrete carbonation and carbonation‐induced corrosion of embedded steel are explained in detail, together with a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing these processes. The role of environmental relative humidity is underlined. Based on the available knowledge, mechanism‐based and empirical models are presented for carbonation depths, corrosion initiation, and corrosion current for engineering use. Some simulations are performed for typical engineering applications. Finally, the impact of steel corrosion on structural performance of concrete elements is discussed, and the fundamental issues for durability design against carbonation‐induced corrosion are elucidated.
