A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The developments in group support system demonstrates how new technologies are having an impact on Soft Operational Research (OR)/problem structuring method (PSM) practice. Machine learning is another burgeoning technology development that has the potential to have an impact on Soft OR/PSM practice. This chapter looks at two technologies: augmented qualitative analysis based on the use of probabilistic topic models, and application of Large Language Models (LLMs). LLMs have recently become the ubiquitous expressions of the public perception of artificial intelligence. The release of a simple and intuitive interactive user interface to LLMs through the use of prompts has catapulted this technology to widespread awareness. However, it is difficult to see how the process of knowledge creation through a process of situated enquiry/action research in a specific problem context could be more different from assembling responses to prompts from an LLM.
