Nondestructive Testing in Concrete Engineering
This chapter reviews two kinds of tests for assessing the properties of concrete material or structures, namely destructive and nondestructive. Nondestructive testing in concrete engineering (NDT‐CE) is an important tool for assessing the quality and maturity of a concrete structure during construction, which helps decision‐making in construction procedures and speed. Since the most widely used inquiring agent in NDT‐CE is mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves, understanding the basic wave theory is essential to managing NDT‐CE. The chapter also reviews the wave theories, including wave reflection and transmission. The noncontact electrical resistivity measurement provides a good nondestructive way to determine and assess the setting time and mechanical properties of the cement‐based materials during the entire setting process. Corrosion monitoring can provide significant advantages when integrated into both preventative maintenance and the processes inherent to safety management programs.
