A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Retooling Architectural Performance Analysis
Population growth, urbanization, and related space constraints require new construction and densification of urban centres around the world, including especially sufficient housing for a growing population. The goal of the sustainable design process is the development of buildings that ‘meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. By testing, adapting, and optimizing design ideas in the early stage, optimal solutions for sustainable and resilient buildings can be identified efficiently and with lower costs. Computational design tools make this possible, allowing the assessment of building performance in terms of energy, daylight, ventilation, and comfort well before a building's foundation is laid. Since their emergence, environmental modelling tools have developed and matured at a breathtaking pace and have become a key component in architectural and urban design.
