Mini House
This chapter presents the history and development process of mini house. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of mini house. The chapter is also an ideal resource for urban planners, housing developers, builders, and housing trust professionals. Historic scrolls and 19th‐century pictures of Tokyo show how much the existing urban layout differs from the city's traditional aspect. The “mini” or “micro” house is probably the most pragmatic type of urban housing, a type of structure with the simple requirement of providing a residence on a lot with minimal dimensions, without a clearly repetitive spatial logic, and with constant geometric variations. The R Micro Housing project in Surabaya, Indonesia, is a bold example that not only provides affordable living near the city center but transforms a deep single‐family lot of 39 × 98 feet into five units of two different types, including parking for all.
