A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In this chapter we examine structural alterations to residential dwellings including openings in walls that require beams to support the loads above and alterations to roof structures. The structural considerations required when undertaking loft conversions in cut roofs is explained with a typical diagram showing proposed alterations. We consider and provide examples of typical beam sizes for openings and emphasise the temporary supports that require consideration. The chapter provides design examples and compares the use of flitch beams to timber beams. Finally we discuss the use of manufactured lintels including steel and precast concrete. The installation requirements and load capacities of such lintels are explained.
