Battery Park City
A vestige of a comprehensive plan for all of Lower Manhattan, Battery Park City appears today as a unique case and urban paradox. Built in its entirety on reclaimed land, it nevertheless symbolises the 1980s rejection of Modernist planning principles and the return to a more contextual urbanism. The development of Battery Park City in the southwestern part of Manhattan Island should be viewed against the background of a multitude of ambitious regeneration initiatives which were designed to avoid further urban decay due to the exodus of business and building activity from Down‐ to Midtown. The interesting point about Battery Park City is not only its highly prominent location, but also and foremost the fact that its status and set‐up do not fit the stereotype of an American, and therefore allegedly ultra‐liberal, development pattern.
