Programs that Encourage Staying at Home with Service Assistance
Purpose‐built age‐restricted housing that provides help and assistance to the frail, work for many because they provide support at the margin of need. But for individuals with families who are able to help older people who insist on staying at home, there are many more programs. This chapter briefly describes nine programs that have sought to provide an alternative to conventional group living arrangements. The programs include home modification programs, Danish home care system, PACE (Program for All‐inclusive Care for the Elderly), home‐ and community‐based care, Beacon Hill_Village (BHV), age‐friendly cities, accessory dwelling units (ADU), GenSmart House and Next Gen House, and Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC's). These programs make physical modifications to the environment, deliver personal care and transportation assistance to the home, or involve strategies that make it easier for family members to lend a helping hand. These types of programs are multiplying and are becoming more effective through high‐tech communications innovations.
