Which Came First, the Environment or the Environmental Professional?
In his column, AWWA Executive Director David LaFrance describes how, unbeknownst to him, he became an environmental professional early in his career, working on issues involving the environment as opposed to advocating strictly for the environment. LaFrance discusses triple‐bottom‐line analysis as placing traditional financial analysis on an equal footing with environmental and societal analyses. He goes on to discuss how managing the balance between the triple‐bottom‐line components ‐ economic, societal, and environmental ‐ is the key to sustainability. For water professionals, the goal of sustainability and the need to protect the environment are inseparable. Although the triple‐bottom‐ line approach provides a level playing field on which to evaluate each of these three components, it is equally clear that without a managed and protected water environment, our societal and economic objectives are not achievable.
