Example 1: Strengthening a slab with externally bonded CFRP strips
This chapter presents an example of strengthening a concrete slab with externally bonded CFRP strips. It first provides an overview of the system and the loading patterns. An outline of the internal forces is provided, and followed by a demonstration to calculate the prestrain. Next, a simplified bond analysis is carried out, according to Deutscher Ausschuss für Stahlbeton (DAfStb) guidelines. As a part of an accurate analysis, the verification of flexural strength, the determination of crack spacing and the determination of strip forces, and other key calculations are shown. The analysis of shear capacity according to DAfStb guideline part 1 [1, 2] section 6.2.1 (RV 10) and according to DIN EN 1992‐1‐1 [20] is also demonstrated. The chapter ends with a note on serviceability limit state.
