Exhibitions and the Centering of Drawing in Contemporary Art
Of particular importance to the change in the perception of drawing as a central artistic medium in contemporary art were a series of exhibitions organized during over more than three decades at the Museum of Modern Art. These exhibitions can be seen as reactions to, as well as generative of, wider global tendencies and forces that have shaped the place of drawing since the 1950s. Largely interrelated and with overlapping thematic concerns these exhibitions all surveyed drawing's status as a medium even while situating, with varying historiographic emphasis, its eventual expansion and resurgence. These were exhibitions functioning to define as well as chart the increasing relevance of the medium of drawing to contemporary art practices. As such, they provide a kind of reflective focus through which to map the effect of exhibition practices on the centering of drawing within contemporary art history
