Superhydrophobic Coatings for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Applications
Superhydrophobic surfaces are ideal sources for various applications where water repellence is the prime factor. Sometimes these surfaces also repel other liquids making them the supreme choice for marine, biomedical, and other energy sector applications. Due to the hazardous nature of the synthetic chemicals, only a tiny number of superhydrophobic coatings are suitable for biomedical applications. Modern biomedical equipment has considerable challenges from biofouling. Hence, an appropriate modification is necessary for these applications. Biofouling, and microorganisms on the material. Biofouling caused by bacteria and other microorganisms on medical implants of hip, knee, cardiovascular stents, artificial organs, vascular prosthesis, contact lenses, and catheters poses a high risk of infection. Superhydrophobic materials play an important role in addressing these problems, and recently they have been used in personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, face shields, and face masks to fight the COVID‐19 pandemic. For medical applications, biodegradable and biocompatible products need to be chosen. Hence, metals, natural polymers, synthetic biopolymers, and nanoparticles are used for coatings. This chapter emphasizes the fundamentals of superhydrophobic and its applications in medical devices and hospital hygiene management.
