Electrochemical Noise as Nondestructive Evaluation Technique for Understanding and Monitoring Corrosion
Electrochemical noise (EN) is a nondestructive technique for real‐time online corrosion monitoring that requires no external perturbation to decode useful information on the nature and rate of general and localized corrosion from naturally corroding surfaces. Electrochemical potential noise is measured between a working electrode or a working electrode pair and a noise‐free reference electrode or a pseudoreference electrode. EN covers a wide spectrum of applications that includes identifying and distinguishing various corrosion types, monitoring crack propagation in stress corrosion cracking, evaluation of corrosion inhibitors, coating evaluation, monitoring microbiologically induced corrosion, and many others. Corrosive wear or tribocorrosion is the degradation of a material in the presence of both wear and corrosion. EN technique is sensitive to changes occurring during corrosion wear and hence could be used as a tool to monitor fretting corrosion and coating delamination due to fretting.
