Probabilistic Evaluation of Existing Structures
This chapter considers the main issues relevant for the probabilistic reliability assessment of existing structures. It discusses the criteria that might be used for decisions about the acceptability of an existing structure. Using analytical techniques to model the existing structure for evaluation has the advantage that known probabilistic information about materials and loadings relevant to the existing can be incorporated directly into the analysis. The chapter provides a review of the assessment procedures for existing structures, including the use of proof loading and any knowledge of service performance. It describes how Bayes' rule can be used to update an a priori estimate of the probability of failure of a structure given additional information, irrespective of whether this is subjective or not. The risk acceptance criteria for existing, service‐proven, structures should not, in principle, be the same as those for the design of new structures.
