Capacity Estimation of Underground Rainwater Harvesting System Installed in a Volcanic Ash Soil Area
This chapter shows the soil‐physically based way of calculating the water storage capacity of an underground rainwater harvesting system installed in a volcanic ash soil area, Japan. It presents the applicability of the underground rainwater harvesting system to the lands with other soil types the lands with shallow ground water, the lands on slopes, the lands with dry climate, and the land in the vicinity of Tokyo area, Japan. The chapter also presents the recommended procedure to estimate percolation capacity from the rectangular permeable container into soil. The efficiency of the underground rainwater harvesting system strongly depends on the physical properties of soils. It is worthwhile to measure the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil, and to estimate the possible amount of outflow of water, Q value, from the permeable container into the surrounding soil by using the estimation method described in this chapter.
