A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
General considerations
The experiences of research activities of the last years were selected and clustered into 10 key principles for successful design and operation of SHC systems. This section aims to articulate key features of best practice design, as a set of high level principles that the engineer should pay particular attention to when designing a new Solar Air‐conditioning installation.
The importance of these key principles is considered paramount. In each of the subsequent chapters, these principles are continuously referenced. And the usage of each of these principles is indexed so that the reader can quickly navigate to how these principles are used in practice.
Further consideration provides economic information of a general nature, in an attempt to highlight key areas for the designer to focus on and to identify areas for further research. An overview of 10 best practice examples collected in the course of IEA SHC Task 48 and its economic analysis shows that SHC systems can already be cost competitive against reference systems under certain conditions.
Assessing the performance of SHC systems, in a common comparable format, is complicated by the numerous applications, alternative energy sources and design possibilities. A wide range of key performance indicators, for evaluating technical and economic quality and cost effectiveness, are fully discussed and defined in the IEA SHC Task 48. Generally more than one metric will be required to capture a complete picture of system performance; nevertheless the most important ones are referenced and described briefly.
