New Approaches Mean More Options for Implementing Ozone
This article discusses increasing utility interest in using ozone for disinfection, especially now that costs have come down due to sidestream injection. The article describes how significant advances in ozone generation technology in the past few years have made it possible to economically generate ozone at concentrations as high as 12‐16% by weight. Advantages of sidestream injection are discussed and include higher transfer efficiency, improved operational efficiency, and reduced costs. The article provides an example of conventional ozone contactor retrofit at the Modesto Regional Water Treatment Plant in Modesto, California, that also presented design challenges.
