The Changing Context of Urban Heritage Management
Chapter 3 outlines the global processes that underlie the need to revise the conservation paradigm. Those that are directly related to the future of the historic city include the global urbanisation drive; the need to promote urban sustainability; the impact of climate change; the changing role of cities in the global economy; the rise of tourism as a main new urban economic sector; and, finally, the changing perception of heritage values of the historic city and the greater role played today by the intangible dimensions of heritage.
All these processes reinforce the need to pay more heed to the impact of contemporary transformations, and indeed to define conservation as the management of change.
