Drivers, Standards, and Methodologies
The drivers for standards are sustainability based. To provide transparency and judge compliance, reference must ultimately be made to nationally/internationally accepted analysis tools and standards. Some of the major methodologies used for this purpose in the United Kingdom, Europe, and around the world are described in this chapter. To ensure that the building achieves its sustainability intent over its lifetime, the owner/occupier should employ a further set of methodologies as part of its operational management. The chapter discusses some of the more common techniques. A successful certification is dependent on a sustainability analysis of the planning, procurement, design, specification, construction, and operation of a scheme. Certification is made by independent assessors. Designers, tradespeople, and components can also be Passivhaus certified. The highest certification (Platinum), typically, requires 80% of optimisations to be achieved.
