A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Sand Filters
Sand filters are a relatively simple stormwater control measures (SCMs) with a simple purpose: to filter runoff to remove particulate matter. The common feature is the sand layer through which the stormwater flows for filtration and particulate matter removal. Important to understanding sand filter performance, maintenance, and clogging is the concept of headloss development. The sand media provides resistance to infiltrating runoff. Consideration of sand filter design and clogging was evaluated by Urbonas. Sand filters clog quickly, based on the accumulated particulate matter. While traditional sand filters are highly effective at removal of particulate and particulate‐bound pollutants, sand filter performance is lacking for dissolved pollutants. Geotextile filters may be considered as a simple alternative filtration SCM to remove particulate matter from urban stormwater runoff. Sand filters have a long history of performance of TSS removal and are considered an important component of green stormwater infrastructure.
