A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter explains the author's journey as the CEO of HOK from the age 60, after 36 years he had started as a junior designer. HOK had earned a good overall reputation, viewed by its profession and the clients as one of the best design firms. Yet, while HOK looked good from the outside, it was a mess on the inside. Too many offices were underperforming, and the profitable offices were understandably unhappy to see their profits used to prop up weak ones. The chapter explains that four goals—successive levels, representing four firm‐wide goals. The goal at the bottom was the foundation. The next was good operations, then came true collaboration and finally dreams were at the top. The author also began a monthly series of pyramid messages to everyone in HOK using the new, integrated email system.
