USEPA, Navajo Cooperate In Monitoring Program
The author of this letter to the editor writes to correct the negative impression of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)'s role in improving water quality on the Navajo reservation given in a “Face to Face” interview in the March 1985 issue of the Journal American Water Works Association. While the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) does not hold the USEPA responsible for conducting baseline studies, the USEPA and the Indian Health Service cooperated in a joint effort in 1979‐80 to collect and analyze baseline samples from every public water system on the Navajo reservation. The author details USEPA efforts to train operators on reservations and to assist Navajo Tribe members in gradually taking a more direct role in their drinking water program. A rebuttal by Susan Williams, who was interviewed in the original article, is included.
