There are four names often found in building contracts which can be confusing: goods, materials, workmanship, and workmanlike manner. Two of them are found in the phrase 'goods and materials'. Occasionally, in some forms of contract, the contractor is only to provide goods and materials 'so far as they are procurable', i.e. obtainable. Workmanship refers to the skill in carrying out a task. Like the much‐abused word 'quality', the word is severely limited in meaning unless provided with an adjective. The two terms are obviously related because although a concrete floor in its finished state is a matter of workmanship, the process of preparing and fixing formwork and mixing and pouring the concrete may or may not be accomplished in a workmanlike manner. Having said that, if the floor is not laid in a workmanlike manner, it is unlikely to result in good workmanship.
