Ancient Ruins and Their Preservation
The Case Study of the Parthenon's East Porch
By the early 1840s the prevailing view toward the preservation and elaboration of Greek antiquities had entered a practical stage. The term “anastylosis” or the putting back of fallen architectural members onto their original building, had not yet been coined; it was only introduced and adopted into common usage a century later. The present‐day restorations on the Acropolis began immediately after the restoration of the new Greek Republic in 1976. The chapter also presents a case study on the restoration work at the east porch of the Parthenon. The work on the pronaos demonstrates that aesthetic concerns are fundamental to the restoration process and illustrates the dynamic connection between these concerns and other theoretical principles of restoration applied to ancient monuments, such as the preservation of its historical evidence and the extent of an intervention.
