A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter provides readers some food for thought on the whole subject of what we mean by ‘sustainability’ in our everyday uses of wood. The timber resource can be engaged in two ways: by continually growing more trees in our existing forests – making more efficient use of them by ‘managing’ them – and by growing a lot of entirely new forests, in places where there weren’t any before. The Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP) requires all companies who are members of the UK Timber Trade Federation to show that they have taken all reasonable steps to ensure that their purchases of timber and wood‐based products have come from legally‐harvested and properly‐licensed sources. It is true that there is currently no requirement within the RPP to ensure that those forest resources are also sustainably managed, but the author firmly believes that this has been a step in the right direction.
