Standardization of Design Procedures for Prestressed‐Concrete Pipe
After several years of study and review, the Specifications and Technical Problem Committee of the American Concrete Pressure Pipe Association has developed a design procedure for prestressed pipe which has been adopted by the industry. This article discusses the design procedure that allows engineers to check the designs submitted by any of the producers of pipe made under C301. There will be some variations between old and new designs, but these will be relatively small. In some cases the wire area will be increased and in others it will be decreased. This procedure, together with the requirements in sec. 3.2 of AWWA C301, gives designs suitable for the internal pressure and at least 6 ft of earth cover under normal circumstances. There is also an automatic water hammer allowance of 50 psi or 40 per cent of the design pressure, whichever is greater. Therefore, most pipe can be designed according to this simple hydrostatic procedure. When external loads exceed the equivalent of 6 ft of cover, a combined load analysis may be used.
