Dam Breach Modeling
Floods resulting from breaching of dams can lead to devastating disasters with tremendous loss of life and property. It is important to understand the process of dam breaching and, if possible, to obtain key breaching parameters required to quantitatively describe the dam breaching process. In general, two sorts of prediction models were involved: empirical formulas based on case study data, and physically based prediction models. This chapter presents the available dam breaching data obtained from past dam failure cases. The data presented includes those for embankment dam breaching, landslide dam breaching and dike breaching. Then, the empirical formulas based on case study data, numerical simulation of overtopping erosion, and numerical simulation of internal erosion are presented in the chapter. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the application of the empirical prediction models: the overtopping failure of Banqiao Dam in China, and the seepage erosion/piping failure of Teton Dam in the USA.
