Stuyvesant Town
Stuyvesant Town was announced in April 1943 and subsidised through aids from the State of New York . The project should be considered against the background of controversial discussions that were occurring at the federal level during this time regarding urban redevelopment and public housing. Density was to remain the focus of discussion, as the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company's proposed scheme included a planned population of 24,000 which almost re‐established the historic figure. Ambitiously, this was to be achieved with a site coverage of only 25 per cent – down from the almost 70 per cent of the Gashouse District – and a forest of 35 12‐ and 13‐storey‐tall buildings. The highly advantageous development circumstances were the result of the Hampton‐Mitchell Redevelopment Companies Law of 1943, tailored specifically to the needs of Stuyvesant Town in view of urban redevelopment undertaken through an insurance company (MetLife).
