Sodium Geopolymer Reinforced with Jute Weave
In this study, sodium geopolymer was reinforced with as‐received and alkali‐treated, jute weaves. Tensile tests showed that the alkali‐treated jute composite had higher tensile strength and elongation at breakage than did the as‐received jute composite. This increase was attributed to two reasons. First, tensile strength and elongation at breakage of jute fibers increased due to the removal of hemicellulose on alkali treatment. Second, jute fibers became rough on alkali treatment, and this led to increase in friction that in turn increased the tensile strength. Energy dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy results showed that addition of jute fibers did not adversely affect the Na : Al : Si ratio of the surrounding geopolymer matrix and the alkali treatment of jute fibers did not affect the composition of the geopolymer matrix. The failure mode of “pressed” tensile specimens was delamination, while “unpressed” samples underwent geopolymer matrix failure. Plate impact tests on as‐received jute geopolymer showed that the composite punctured and the matrix shattered under impact loading. X‐ray diffraction confirmed the presence of geopolymer in the composite.
