A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Bikesharing reduced member driving in all cities surveyed; the impact on walking was mixed, with similar amounts of people increasing and decreasing walking. An analysis of survey responses from members of the carsharing operator car2go revealed impacts of carsharing participation on vehicle ownership, modal shift, and greenhouse gas emissions in five North American cities placed an average of half a mile apart. While a mix of uses provides options to reduce auto trips over the course of a week, the presence of local‐serving retail offers a distinct 2 percent trip reduction to both residential and nonresidential sites. By addressing the demand for parking, the amount of supply provided can be reduced by nearly one‐third, creating more costefficient, land‐efficient, and community supportive projects. Urban highways that cannot justify their existence should face removal. Neighborhoods and cities working to remove urban highways should pursue specific strategies for removal.
