Wind Load Factors and Design Mean Recurrence Intervals
This chapter discusses the development of appropriate wind load factors. It introduces the definition of the wind load factor and discusses the calibration of the wind load factor with respect to past practice. The chapter provides examples of the dependence of the wind load factor upon uncertainties specific to particular design situations. The examples show that the uncertainty in the wind speeds dominates the other individual uncertainties. The chapter concerns the use of augmented design mean recurrence intervals (MRIs) in lieu of products of wind load factors larger than unity by nominal wind loads or wind effects. The dynamic response of the structure depends upon its dynamic properties (natural frequencies, modal shapes, and damping ratios). The chapter examines, for various cases of interest, the degree to which the influence of an individual uncertainty on the magnitude of the wind load factor is significant.
