This chapter discusses the Haussmann project, selected for its considerable historic relevance. Being predominantly linear, Haussmann's interventions do not really fit the scope of most other chosen case studies. The chapter explores why his interventions are frequently referred to, but apparently never applied to genuinely comparable means for ongoing urban renewal. Several of the answers to this question have been touched upon, and are linked to the fact that the Baron's name is today, at least for the wider public, mainly associated with aesthetic questions and pure facadism. Even the fairly recent revival of the train stations through high‐speed connections, and the return of wealthier residents to the urban core, cannot hide the fact that the regional logic of most cities is incomparable to the mid‐19th century. Illustrations include the unbuilt proposal of 1856 by the architect Hippolyte Barnout, interventions of the Second Empire, and facades of Avenue de l'Opéra.
