Historic and Present Principles for Design, Assessment and Maintenance of Offshore Structures
In order to understand an old offshore structure, it is important to understand the standards, calculation methods, materials, fabrication methods, installation methods and maintenance routine that was used at the time when the structure was built. For this purpose, this chapter discusses historic development of codes and recommended practices. Assessment of existing and ageing structures will be performed according to International Standards Organisation (ISO) standards, but NORSOK standards, United Kingdom (UK) regulation and American Petroleum Institute (API) standards are also used. Structural integrity management (SIM) is a key process in ensuring the safety of offshore structures. The purpose of SIM is to identify changes, to evaluate the impact of these changes, mitigate the impact of these changes if found necessary with the aim of keeping the structure sufficiently safe during operation and use. The chapter also discusses current safety principles applicable to SI. These safety principles are linked to hazard management.
