Effective use of UHPC for Deep Foundation Piles
This chapter describes the development of a H‐shaped ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) pile that can be used in lieu of concrete or steel piles for transferring vertical loads in bridge foundations. Information on different UHPC pile sections studied at the conceptual level and the details of the final prestressed section chosen for the UHPC pile are presented. UHPC has advantages over normal concrete as well as high‐performance concrete in both strength and durability. The relatively high cost of UHPC, however, emphasizes the need to use this material efficiently. The use of UHPC piles may reduce the total number of piles required for a bridge foundation. The initial cost of a UHPC pile foundation could thus be lower than that of a steel pile alternative in some situations, and the maintenance costs for UHPC piles are expected to be significantly lower than those associated with traditional piles.
