Methods for Strengthening Reinforced Concrete Buildings
This chapter describes the most common techniques for the strengthening of a reinforced concrete building and explains their advantages and disadvantages. Concrete jacketing is probably the most widely used technique for strengthening RC members. The term shotcrete refers to both the material and the construction method. Shotcrete usually contains an increased content of cement and aggregates with a small granulometric gradient. Fiber‐reinforced polymer materials in retrofit are mainly used as a replacement for steel reinforcement, both longitudinal and transverse, in lightly reinforced members, so as to increase their flexural and/or shear capacity. The effect of masonry infills in the dynamic response of reinforced concrete structures subjected to earthquake loading is significant, especially in older construction with small, flexible, and lightly reinforced concrete members. Engineers usually ignore foundation strengthening, since it is difficult to justify technically and economically.
