Diversity in Agricultural Landscapes
Diversity (heterogeneity) is an intrinsic characteristic of landscapes and a primary determinant of landscape function. Understanding and working with this diversity is the key to sustainable landscape management. The study of landscape processes is a basic and an applied science, and an understanding of landscape functions is essential to the development of a sustainable agriculture and society. This chapter discusses the concepts of landscape structure and function. It describes the structural elements of landscapes and some of their measurable properties, a few of the indices that are used as synthetic measures of overall landscape structure, and some examples of measures of landscape function. The chapter also considers landscape function in relation to landscape structure which is the support of community. Landscapes cannot be isolated from the pressures on agricultural landscapes for products and services, and the ability to sustain landscape functions will depend on successfully meeting challenges at larger scales.
