Contractors frequently use builders’ quantities ‘behind the scenes’. They are used to build up the contractor's price but are not normally seen by the employer. There are several ways that builders’ quantities can be prepared and the case study in this Chapter illustrates one approach. It concerns a lift pit which is to be part of a proposed new school. The project is to be procured on a design and build basis and builders’ quantities are needed to price this particular item of work. On‐screen measurement from a PDF file is employed to prepare the builders’ quantities using the Buildsoft Cubit non‐SMM based software.
