A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Quantification
Performance evaluation procedures integrate two distinct parts: An “analytical framework” to provide a systematic, methodical organization to analyze individual components and integrate all parts into a description; and “Quantification” to provide numerical measures of performance. A building evaluation uses all information that is accessible within the available time frame to provide quantitative measures for performance events. Most engineering estimates are based on calculations. The quality of an estimate depends on the amount of information that is used, the skill in translating that knowledge into performance understanding and the time available to evaluate relevant details and conditions. Concepts of classical safety analysis may be adapted to organize uncertainty information associated with fire performance evaluations. Variability and uncertainty may be grouped into three categories: stability of conditions, variability in physical parameters, professional practices.
