Cleaning Methods for Deep Wells and Pumps
As the demand for additional water supplies steadily increases, it has become very important for communities utilizing wells to make the most efficient use of their existing facilities. This is just as important as the development of new wells in the effort to maintain adequate water supplies. Two factors which are extremely important to the efficient operation of a well are stimulation – or, as it is sometimes called, “redevelopment” – of the well when it has declined in productivity, and the cleaning and, if necessary, reconditioning of the pump. There are four basic causes of declines in well production: lowering of the static water level; inefficient pump operation caused by worn, corroded, or plugged parts; deposits of scale, corrosion products, and microorganism growths in the well screen area and on the face of the formation; and, fouling of the well screen area by mud, sand and silt. Reconditioning of the well and pump can help in recovering lost production if the decline is due to any of the last three causes.
