The principles and causes of water hammer are reviewed as a reminder that engineers, operators, and managers of water systems should have at least an intuitive understanding of this hydraulic phenomenon. Potential water hammer problems should be considered when any pipeline design is evaluated, and a thorough surge analysis should be undertaken in many instances to avoid costly malfunctions in a distribution system. The phenomenon of water hammer has not been widely understood, and this disregard cannot be considered good design practice.
