Tension piles and anchors (R 217)
The main components used for anchoring waterfront structures are displacement piles, micropiles, special piles, and anchors. Two different types of failure must be investigated for tension piles: pull‐out of the piles from the ground and uplift of the block of soil containing the piles. For preliminary design, the external loadbearing capacity of tension piles can be derived approximately from the resistance measured in cone penetration tests. The loadbearing capacity of such prefabricated raking anchor piles can be improved by vibrating each anchor plate into the bed of the watercourse for a distance of half its height with the help of an underwater vibrator. Unlike displacement piles, anchors always have a well‐defined anchorage length or anchoring point via which the load is transferred into the ground as well as an equally clearly defined unbonded length over which no load is intended to be transferred into the ground.
