Finite Element Model Updating
This chapter presents various methods for finite element model updating to improve the correlation between the measurements of the tested structure and the predictions of the finite element model. Problems in finite element modelling, such as construction of finite element models and errors in modelling, are discussed. Parameters to be updated are studied so as to be chosen at an appropriate level to reflect physical behaviour of the structure. The popular sensitivity based methods are introduced for model updating, by minimising the difference between the output measurements and the finite element predictions. The effective dynamic perturbation method avoids limitations in sensitivity based methods, requiring only limited information on incomplete modal data for reliable model updating. Finally, a case study on model updating of an actual super‐tall structure is presented.
