Greek Baths
Greek baths flourished and reached their highest point of development in the Hellenistic period. This chapter focuses on the Greek public bath, the balaneion, to the exclusion of other forms of bathing, and it considers the broad geographical (throughout the Mediterranean) and chronological (from the fifth century BCE to the second century CE) distribution of public baths. It covers the historical study of Greek baths, the early bathing facilities, baths found in Western Greece and in Egypt, and baths in the later Hellenistic Greece. Balaneutiké, published in 1962 by Rene Ginouves, was the first comprehensive study of Greek baths. The Dipylon Baths in Athens are the earliest of the four bathing facilities that are archaeologically attested in the city. By the late fourth century BCE, the balaneion had made its way to Greek Sicily and South Italy.
